Project Details & Design Approach
Northshore Public Library – Outdoor Learning Center
Commissioned by a Northshore Public Library, I enthusiastically embraced the challenge of designing an outdoor center that blends education with play. Grounded in research that supports experiential learning, especially in early childhood, the concept fosters knowledge retention through hands-on engagement. The design evokes nostalgia with workshop and kitchen playsets reminiscent of our childhood, seamlessly blending fun and learning. Dedicated science tables encourage guided experimentation, while easels invite budding artists to express their creativity. A covered stage serves as a dynamic space for performances, including plays, puppet shows, films, and concerts, enriching the cultural and imaginative experience.
One of the highlights is the interactive musical area, featuring outdoor instruments such as congas, marimbas, chimes, and an in-ground foot piano—designed to spark sensory exploration and collaborative play. Benches and shaded seating areas provide places to relax and observe, fostering a comfortable leisure and educational environment. A water wall not only adds aesthetic appeal but also helps mitigate street noise, thereby contributing to a tranquil and immersive setting.
This project merges design and pedagogy, creating a space where curiosity, creativity, and community can thrive outdoors.
